Year 8 Trip to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

The Year 8 Students enjoyed a lovely excursion to the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth.  The tour of HMS Warrior allowed the group to discover  what sea warfare was like in mid to late 19th Century.  We learned about how engineers of the time overcame the issue of navigating via compass in an iron hulled ship, the origins of the phrase "as the crow flies" and why the Warrior was so cutting edge in 1860.  The students also enjoyed the hands on "Action Stations" interactive exhibition which saw many attempt the 30 foot high indoor climbing rock.  This section also saw students shooting targets in a machine gun simulator and performing a take off and landing in a helicopter simulator.  I would like to say how pleased I was with the students behaviour and interaction with the staff and other visitors.
