Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8)
Students studySpanish, German and French in Year 7 and then specialise in one in Year 8. This ensures that they are better prepared to enmbark o n GCSE courses in Year 9. Teaching is tailored to a more conversational approach and in appropriate topic areas aspects of grammar, linguistics and culture are brought in to add depth, detail and colour to student learning. They receive approximately 4 hours of tuition a fortnight with homework set on top of this.
Course books are used which give a broad outline to student studies. Teachers also draw upon a wide range of departmental resources which include listening material and power points.
Students get regular access to computer suites where they make good use of computer software plus dedicated language learning websites designed to reinforce classroom learning. A visit abroad is organised every summer which proveides linguistic challenge and cultural awareness.
Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11)
Currently German, French and Spanish are on offer. Students follow a GCSE course that tests linguistic ability in the 4 key areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. A wide range of topic areas are covered and students are expected to develop their conversational, written and grammatical skills that will allow for measured and extended communication which will include use of past, present and future tenses. From 2018 onwards, assessment will be purely by final examination, and controlled assessments will be phased out..
